OnePrayer video project: Shoot #1

April 28, 2008

Here’s a couple shots of a video shoot I was doing in the rain Friday night. There are some woods on the back part of our church property we used as our location. It’s all a part of a video we’re preparing for the OnePrayer project LifeChurch.tv is putting on.

I don’t want to spoil the final video, but if it turns out I think it’ll be a spiritually challenging piece. I’ll post some more as soon as I finish getting it all shot. The deadline is beginning to make me sweat…

A BIG thanks to Jeremy for letting us cover him in mud, and also to T.J. for all his misc. help — especially protecting the camera from the rain!

Bernie Mac can read.

April 23, 2008

I don’t exactly know where to start with this post. The other day I heard this ad on the radio. It was Bernie Mac talking about how we need to save our libraries. (I never thought I would say “library” and “Bernie Mac” in the same sentence.) I guess I thought it was interesting because I get most of my information from the internet.

I’m NOT saying I’m against books, but I think most would agree that there has been somewhat of a cultural shift from written words to pictures and video. Every time you look there is more imagery and motion competing for your attention. We’re seeing an increase in digital signage and internet ads with video everyday.

But last night during a commercial break (I was watching American Idol, of course) I noticed a trend in motion graphics that’s been catching on. Agencies are using TYPOGRAPHY in more advertising than I realized. I’ve seen it a lot, but I just find it ironic as our culture seems to be moving away from the printed book, that we’re seeing WORDS pop up in our VIDEOS so much.

Here is kind of fun example of what I’m seeing. Watch it. Enjoy it. And then let me know your thoughts here.

For more fun search “Typography” in YouTube and see what you get.

Playing with dual monitors.

April 10, 2008

When I started at MCC back in August I walked into my office to find a newly built computer especially for video and graphic design. It came complete with dual 20″ monitors which I thought was pretty sweet. Since then I’ve learned to tweak my workflow to make use of the extra visual real estate.

Recently I was reading an article posted on Lifehacker.com about desktop options. It pointed out some pretty cool software called DisplayFusion. It does a variety of things but one of the perks is that is allows you to stretch one image across multiple screens.

I know this software isn’t life changing or anything, but it certainly is fun to look at each day as I come into my office after lunch.

Another notable feature is the ability to drag maximized windows from screen to screen without resizing first – very handy.

PERSONAL NOTE: My dad was a HUGE Dodger fan.  I guess it rubbed off on me a little…

Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

Not having internet at home has caused me to dive deep into Microsoft Windows XP accessory gaming. I know, it’s a sad day.

However lame it may seem, I have to share that I have successfully won 2 separate Spider Solitaire games on the DIFFICULT level. It was no easy task, and I’m ashamed at the time I put into ‘conquering’ it.

Seriously, try it out and let me know how you do…

SIDE NOTE: I went to see the movie 21 this past week. Don’t waste your money. Wait and rent.

Easter Intro

April 7, 2008

Here is a quick look at how we started our Easter service. It was a somewhat experimental Sunday in that we tried a number of technical things we have never done:

  1. Roaming camera guys on stage
  2. Song lyrics over live camera (MediaShout lyrics keyed over video using Video Toaster 4)
  3. 5 total camera angles to choose from (up 2 from a regular Sunday)
  4. Roughly a dozen TVs wired to a video switcher w/3 feeds (live feed, center screen graphics, & separate laptop running various looping backgrounds)
  5. 2 additional people in the video booth running equipment

Of course we had some hang-ups, some of which you can see on this video, but all in all I feel it turned out great — especially for being our first time with so many things.

The ‘hiccup’ in the video when switching camera angles was due to a last minute glitch with our Video Toaster. It was having trouble dealing with our method of keying words over live video. I already have an idea that may fix this if we do it again in the future.

Overall I was VERY pleased with the Sunday. I had a GREAT team of people working lots of overtime, and I appreciate all they bring to the table. They are true servants — thanks, team!

The UNChampions — again.

April 7, 2008

Well, North Carolina did it to me again. For the third year in a row they’ve ruined my bracket when I had them going all the way.

It also killed any chance I had in my Media Team bracket pool I had going. Congrats, Adam! You may have bested me this year, but there’s always next…
